Barlooza Curated Bartender Competition Rules

 

BARLOOZA Competition Guidelines

BARLOOZA, presented by the Washington Avenue Business Improvement District in Miami Beach, is a curated mixology competition where bartenders showcase their creativity, technique and signature cocktails before guests and designated judges.

Eligibility and Check-In

• All participating bartenders must be 21 years of age or older.

• Contestant check-in is from 6:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m.

• All stations must be completely prepared before the competition begins at 8:00 p.m.

• Contestants must comply with all event, venue and applicable alcohol-service requirements.

 

Competition Schedule

• 6:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m.: Contestant check-in and station setup

• 8:00 p.m.: Competition and Official Tasting begin

• 10:15 p.m.: Official Tasting and voting close

• 10:15 p.m.–10:30 p.m.: Scores are verified and tallied

• 10:30 p.m.: The three finalists are announced

• Final Round: Designated judges evaluate the finalists and determine first, second and third place

 

Cocktail Service

• Each bartender will prepare and serve their submitted signature cocktail from 8:15 p.m.–10:15 p.m.

• Cocktails will be evaluated solely on taste and presentation.

• Contestants are responsible for maintaining a clean, organized, and professional station throughout the competition.

• Business advertisements and unrelated promotional materials may not be displayed at the contestant stations.

• Each bartender may have an assistant. Assistants may help with preparation and service but must not interfere with judging or distract from the featured bartender. The evening is about you and your talent.

 

Official Taster Scoring

Official Tasters will score each cocktail using the following system:

• Taste: 1–5 points

• Presentation: 1–3 points

• Maximum guest score: 8 points per cocktail

 

All Official Taster scores must be submitted by 10:15 p.m. The three bartenders with the highest overall guest scores will advance to the final round.

 

Final-Round Judging

• The designated judges will evaluate the three finalists based on taste and presentation.

• The judges’ final-round scores will determine first, second and third place.

• In the event of a tie, the higher taste score will serve as the first tiebreaker.

• If a tie remains, the designated judges will deliberate and make the final decision.

• All decisions made by the designated judges are final.

 

Prizes

• First Place: $2,500

• Second Place: $500

• Third Place: $250

Tie-Breaking Procedure

If two or more finalists are tied on total votes they are to make a new speciality drink and the Judges will decide on the winner for best taste and presentation.

 

Disqualification & Prohibited Conduct

Conduct and Event Discretion

• All contestants, assistants and guests must conduct themselves professionally and respectfully throughout the event.

• Bartenders who miss call time result in voluntary disqualification.

• The Washington Avenue Business Improvement District reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to remove or disqualify any contestant, assistant or guest for conduct it reasonably determines to be unsafe, disruptive, dishonest, unsportsmanlike or otherwise detrimental to the competition, its participants, guests, sponsors, venue or reputation.

• Grounds for removal or disqualification may include rule violations, interference with another contestant, intoxication, harassment, threatening behavior, score manipulation, unauthorized promotion or failure to follow event or venue instructions.

• All decisions made by the Washington Avenue Business Improvement District and the designated judges are final.
